How do you know what to believe in the face of a global pandemic and during one of the most fraught presidential election cycles in U.S. history? Online virtual event live streamed through Facebook.

How do you know what to believe in the face of a global pandemic and during one of the most fraught presidential election cycles in U.S. history? The pandemic is a crisis unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes. Meanwhile, the already heated political atmosphere is complicated by issues that are as far ranging as fears of interference in the U.S. presidential election by foreign governments on social media platforms to memes that spread misinformation. Inaccurate claims are spread, often innocently, but sometimes maliciously. Learn about social media's impact on information, the data and research behind how humans absorb information, and how to guard against fake news and misinformation, by Ohio State University Professor Dr. R. Kelly Garrett.

Garrett is a Professor in the School of Communication at the Ohio State University.  His research concerns online political communication, online news, and the ways in which citizens and activists use new technologies to shape their engagement with contentious political topics. His most recent work, which is supported by an NSF CAREER award, focuses on how people’s exposure to and perceptions of online political information are related to their political beliefs. My work has been published in a number of outlets, including the Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, Political Behavior, the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Communications of the ACM, Daedalus, and Information, Communication & Society.

Before joining the faculty at OSU, Garrett was a Senior Research Fellow in the Center for Research on Information Technology and Organizations (CRITO) at the University of California, Irvine. His work at CRITO, which was done in collaboration with Jim Danziger, focused on the role of information and communication technologies in the work environment and in local politics.

This will be an online, virtual event live-streamed through Facebook and recorded and made available for later viewing.
