Visit us anytime (and many times!) today to help BPL beat Westerville Public Library in this Battle of the Oar competition to see which library can bring more patrons through its doors!
Bexley Public Library has stepped into the ring to challenge Westerville Public Library as a part of the revived Battle for the Oar competition between Bexley’s Capital University and Westerville’s Otterbein University. Today the libraries will compete to see which can bring more patrons through its doors in this high-stakes face off.
Originally started as a canoe race between the two schools, “The Battle for the Oar” or “The Oars” competition started in the 1890s, and spilled over into football, basketball and other sports. This historic rivalry was reawakened in 2021 and the competition was extended to include their respective communities, and now their public libraries.
Bexley Public Library is encouraging all community members to stop by anytime today (or even several times) between 10 am and 8 pm when they’ll be passing out free stickers and buttons in celebration of the competition. As an extra incentive, all books, music, materials, and more will be offered free of charge with their library card.
Bexley Public Library was founded in 1924 and first housed in Bexley High School, now Montrose Elementary School. The present building opened in 1929 and was designed by architects O.C. Miller and R.R. Reeves who drew upon French and Italian architecture from the 17th century for the design.
The library is located at 2411 East Main Street, at the intersection of East Main Street and Cassady Avenue. Parking is available in our parking lot on Euclaire Avenue and in front of the library on Main Street. Main Street is a No Parking Tow Zone from 4:00-6:00 p.m. weekdays.
