July 17 Presentation: Stellar Flybys and Where to Find Them by Everett McArthur - Graduate Student at The OSU Department of Astronomy
The stars in our galaxy are always on the move, but what happens if one shows up in our own neighborhood? During this talk we will explore the movement of the stars and how this can affect our own solar system and the interesting question it raises.
About the Presenter:
Everett McArthur is a first-year graduate student working with Ji Wang, focusing on high-resolution spectroscopy of brown dwarfs—celestial objects that straddle the line between planets and stars. In addition, he investigates highly luminous accreting black holes, which act as strong gravitational lenses for background, higher-redshift galaxies. His work aims to refine our understanding of the relationship between black hole mass and the mass of their host galaxies. He is also deeply passionate about science communication, actively exploring how music, art, and planetariums can serve as creative mediums to share complex scientific ideas with the public.
Check back for the July 24 presentation topic.
